Environmental Program at Earhart
At Earhart, our students delve deeply into environmental studies, surpassing the typical curriculum. We have a dedicated Environmental Education Teacher who collaborates with students in a lab setting and supports classroom instruction.
Utilizing Our Grounds
Our extensive 11-acre campus is a cornerstone of our environmental education. Key features include:
- A large pond
- A wooded area with a nature trail
- Native prairie
- A butterfly garden, designated as a Monarch Waystation
- Proximity to Hellars Grove, a natural prairie with access to the Arkansas River
- O.W.L.S (Outdoor Wildlife Learning Site) grant recipient
- W.H.I.P (Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program) grant recipient
These beautiful grounds provide our students with the unique opportunity to use the outdoors as a classroom.
Environmental Education Strands
We follow a two-year cycle to cover various environmental topics:
Year 1:
- Wetlands
- Oceans
- Grasslands
Year 2:
- Woodlands/Mountains
- Deserts/Rainforests
- Kansas Diversity
Join us at Earhart to explore and learn about the environment in a hands-on, immersive way!
Camping Program at Earhart
Camping is a vital part of our instructional program, seamlessly integrating with our regular curriculum. While it may seem unconventional, many Earhart graduates cherish these experiences as the highlights of their elementary education.
Sunrise Team (Kindergarten and 1st Grade)
- Fall: On-campus day camp
- Spring: Day camp at the Water Center or Nature Center
Our staff, community members and parent volunteers design enriching programs focused on investigation and learning. These camps are far from mere play days!
Lift Team (2nd and 3rd Grade)
- 2nd Grade Fall: Day camp at Earhart
- 2nd Grade Spring: Overnight camp in cabins at Camp Wood (YMCA camp near Emporia)
- 3rd Grade Fall: Overnight camp in tents at school
- 3rd Grade Spring: Overnight camp at Camp Wood
Superstar Team (4th and 5th Grade)
- Fall and Spring: 3-day, 2-night camp trips to various locations in Oklahoma and Kansas
Students pitch their own tents, help cook meals, and clean up, fostering responsibility and teamwork while exploring areas that they have learned about in school.
Parent Involvement
Parents are crucial to the success of our camping trips. We require a minimum number of parent volunteers and enforce a strict Code of Conduct to ensure a positive experience for all.
Join us at Earhart for unforgettable camping adventures that blend education with the great outdoors!
